Douglas Hooven Brimmer died Nov. 9, in Denver, CO, from complications associated with myelodysplastic syndrome.
Son of Harry and Blanche Brimmer and born on Nov. 1, 1943, in Marshalltown, IA, Doug grew up with his surviving sister Sally and late brother Bruce. Doug graduated from Marshalltown High School and the University of Iowa.
He married Sharon Kenyon of Des Moines, IA, in 1965. He and Sharon had two daughters, Dr. Wendy Johnson of West Des Moines, IA and Dr. Allison Brimmer of Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Doug enjoyed cheering for the Iowa Hawkeyes with his son-in-law, Joel Johnson.
Doug served as an officer and pilot in the U.S. Air Force from 1966 to 1971; he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with oak leaf clusters for meritorious service during combat duty in South Viet Nam. Doug loved to fly and was especially pleased that he had become a pilot like his uncles Ike and John who served in World War II.
Doug married Jane Martin Wingfield in Des Moines, IA, in 1980. He was proud to raise Jane's sons Kelly and Coder Wingfield as his own and welcomed Kelly's wife Lu as his daughter, as well.
Doug worked both in management and executive roles in heavy and highway construction, telecommunications and real estate. He accompanied his wife, Jane, to Australia for an adventure down-under.
Doug's true loves were his children, grandchildren, family and friends. He had a passion for history, especially World War II, and relished in-depth and heated conversations about politics and religion and was a devotee of scientist Richard Dawkins. Doug's wife Jane was his best friend.
He took pleasure in spending time with his grandchildren, Boyse and Madeline Wingfield and Haiden and Grace Johnson, who were, in his words, "truly precious". Doug is also survived by his much-loved nieces, nephews, and cousins in Colorado and Iowa.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 15 at Dunn's Funeral Home, 2121 Grand Ave, Des Moines, IA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Doug's memory to Habitat for Humanity and National Public Radio.
