In Memory

David Sather

David Sather

              David Sather

On January 25th, 2023, David Sather, devoted husband, father and grandfather passed away in Littleton, Colorado.

He was born on September 17, 1943 to Stanley and Ruth "Sue" Sather in Chicago, Illinois.

David graduated from Marshalltown High School in 1961. He graduated with a BA from Drake University and continued to earn a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1967.

Graduating law school in 3 years, David took a job as Assistant Attorney General under Lawrence Scalise and Richard Turner. A few years later he opened his own law practice "Sather and Seckington" in Urbandale, Iowa. Soon after, he found his true calling and joined Northwestern Bell as a corporate attorney.

His distinguished 43 career in the Bell System took him all over the  United States.  His time with AT&T in New York City saw him commuting through the World Trade Center on a daily basis.  He then returned to the Midwest for several years in Omaha, Nebraska.  After returning his family to Des Moines for a few years, he was transferred to our Nation's Capital where he oversaw the breakup of the Bell System in the early '80's.  This had him working closely with the United Staes Department of Justice then-President, Bill Clinton. He also made arguments in front of the United States Supreme Court on behalf of his employer.

His storied career concluded with a move to Denver, Colorado in 1987, where he worked for USWest, then Qwest, then CenturyLink, now Lumen.  He is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 61 years, Linda Rhine Sather (MHS Class of 1960).  They have three daughters: Laura Reeves (married to Barry, daughter Alexandria), Suzy Harkias (daughter Olivia and son Maxwell), and Catherine Jones (married to Douglas, daughter Charlotte).

David and Linda loved traveling and after retirement they took 24 cruises and saw 65 countries.  He was a devoted friend, partner, father, and grandfather, and took immense joy in his family.

Not bad for a sax player from Marshalltown.

Please join us in a celebration of life for David Sather and honor a life well lived. We know that he would want us to not dwell on the sad, but remember the good. It is with this in mind that we plan to hold this special event on

From Dave's Daugher, Laura.  Thanks, Laura.

The world has lost a great man and I have lost the world's best Dad.  On Tuesday my father, David Sather, passed away peacefully. He was not only my Dad but he was my mentor, friend and fixer of all things.  He always was the one we looked to for advice, handyman tips or a good story.  We had a good life all thanks to you Dad.

You made your own way in life going from delivering ice cream at night and law school during the day to becoming one of the top Telecommunication lawyers, playing a key role in the divestiture of the traditional Bell System. You taught me to work hard but don't forget to have some fun along the way.  While some of your adventures were a little wacky, we always had fun and in the end we always had a lot of laughs.  I will treasure those memories.

Not only were you the best Dad, you were a wonderful Poppa! I treasure the times that you and Alex shared together. She has her list of Poppaisms-sayings or advice that she learned from her Poppa, so your wisdom will live on.

Sometime during the last few weeks, this quote popped up

"The first born Daughter is always the female version of her Father"

I certainly hope this is true!

We are going to miss you but know you are at peace and pain free.

Thanks for taking time to read a glimpse into the life of my Dad.

A life so wonderfully lived deserves to be celebrated so we will have a Celebration of Life to honor Dad in the Spring

We are so sorry, for your loss. We are keeping all of David's family, close in prayer.  David was a good friend, in my high school class, at MHS.  We were in band together and always had a lot of fun... I loved hearing him play his sax.  He was good!!!!!   Sending you all, our deepest condolscences.  Murphy and Marilyn Thomas Mathews...
