Diana Lee Spencer, 71, of Ankeny, passed away on Thursday, September 25, 2014 after a courageous battle with liver disease.
A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 1st, at Ankeny First United Methodist Church (206 SW Walnut Street). A visitation will be held 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 30th at Ankeny Memorial Funeral Home. (4208 N. Ankeny Blvd.)
Diana was born in Rockford, IL on September 2, 1943 to Commadore and Edna Brewster. She grew up in Marshalltown, IA and graduated from Marshalltown Senior High School and went on to take classes at AIB in Des Moines. She was employed by Lennox Industries in Marshalltown where she met and later married Richard Spencer on October 3, 1966. After the birth of their children, Diana focused on being a homemaker and also volunteered in the community. She served on the Marshalltown Hospital Auxiliary and volunteered in the Methodist church. Later in Richard's career, he and Diana moved to McKinney, TX where they spent 15 years. Eventually they relocated back to Ankeny, Iowa to be close to family.
For never having any formal coaching, Diana was an exceptional athlete. She enjoyed and competed in bowling, tennis, golf, and could even be found playing catch or shooting baskets with her children. One thing she enjoyed for many years was playing bridge. Late in her life she attained the prestigious status of Life Bridge Master.
Above all, Diana absolutely loved her family. She was an amazing wife, mother, and grandmother. During recent years, she spent much of her time attending her grandchildren's various sporting and school events.
Diana is survived by her husband Richard, daughter Jody (Todd), son Barry (Sara), and grandchildren: Kalie, Nathan, Madelyn, Hannah, and Benjamin. She also has a sister, Phyllis (Bob) McCoy and numerous nieces and nephews. Diana has set an example for her family to follow that they will never forget.
Memorials may be directed to Ankeny First United Methodist Church.
